Kurt Beck – The Rival-Lover: The former minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate has been a declared fan of Kaiserslautern since childhood. His obvious affection for Mainz’s great rivals from the Palatinate has always irritated Mainz supporters. Beck himself has said that a loud section of the Mainz fan base took offense at his support for the FCK, and that he drew the obvious consequence.\n\nThe booing reached its peak at the opening of the new arena in July 2011, when he was whistled so ferociously that he left early.
In the end he even gave up his season ticket and declared he would no longer attend matches at the Opel Arena. In truth, the treatment was not entirely fair: without Beck’s government, the new stadium would never have been built.
